Finding Balance: Motherhood While Working Full-Time

Arguably one of the most challenging jobs is being a parent. But being a single parent while juggling a full-time job can sometimes feel impossible.

The cycle of continually going with little sleep and a lot of stress can make you wonder, is a work-life balance for a single-working mom possible? While finding a perfect balance may not be, here are three ways to get closer.

  • Ask for a flexible schedule: More and more companies are becoming family-friendly and allowing flexible schedules for their employees. Speak to your supervisor about flexible schedule options that work for you and the company. Flexible work schedules may include telecommuting, working earlier or later in the day, or a compressed work week.
  • Schedule in self-care: This is something that most of us struggle with, but as a mom who’s working full-time, this may literally have to be penciled into your calendar. Self-care has turned into a buzzword, but it is essential to think about what self-care means for you and schedule it into your week. So, whether it is reading a good book, getting pampered at the neighborhood beauty school or a long bath after the kids are tucked in, schedule and do it.

  • Build a community: In the thick of motherhood while working full-time can feel overwhelming and lonely. Moments, where you order pizza or find yourself picking your child up late from school, can fill you with guilt. But remember, there is a community of other moms who are also working full-time. Try and connect with single parent groups to build a sense of community and support.
